Dates of birth are withheld, and courthouse computers in Oroville and Chico may display some public documents that court rules keep off the internet. The Butte voter file is more restricted: approved purposes, an application, fees, and use rules apply. It is not an open Oroville people directory.

Oroville License and Business Directories

The California DCA Advanced License Search can search first name, last name, license number, or business name. A result may display name, license type, primary status, issue and expiration dates, and discipline indicators. Address details depend on the board and record. The inspected nursing example stated that its address was not disclosed.

For companies tied to Oroville, the California Secretary of State Business Search covers corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships, status, and public filings. Oroville moved city business-license applications and renewals online in 2024, but the city source did not provide a public licensee directory. An Oroville name may be filed or printed under a wider Butte County label. South Oroville, Oroville East, Thermalito, Palermo, Kelly Ridge, and nearby unincorporated areas can share social and mailing ties with the city while falling under county systems. The recorder, assessor, courts, elections office, and library collections are countywide, so a person need not have lived inside city limits to appear in records kept in Oroville.

Historic directories make the boundary issue more visible. Combined volumes may group Chico and Oroville or include Biggs, Durham, Gridley, Hamilton City, Palermo, Paradise, Stirling City, and Wyandotte. Older sources may also use Bidwell Bar, Hamilton, or township labels. Search the volume's full place list before deciding a surname is absent.

Butte County's historic directory trail spans business books, city directories, reverse householders sections, and telephone books. The CSU Chico Butte County Directories Collection provides full-text searching, and its holdings include the 1950 Polk's Chico and Oroville City Directory. Oroville's Searchable 1878 Directory

Butte County Library joined a California Revealed project with the Butte County Historical Society in 2017. The project uploaded 226 historic photographs, 42 oral-history audio files, one movie, and searchable text from an 1878 business and residential directory covering seven Northern California counties. That early directory can supply a name, trade, town, or business before many later public databases existed.

The Butte County Historical Society research links extend the trail to scanned directories, a pre-1905 death index, recorder archives, tombstone transcriptions, maps, and local institutions. Those links also point toward the South Oroville African American Historical Society, Chinese Temple, Lott Home, Pioneer Museum, and Oroville Veterans Memorial Park for community context.

For family history, combine a directory entry with a newspaper notice or oral history. A name in the 1878 book may establish place and trade; a later article can add kin, dates, or a move. That pairing is often more informative than treating either source as a complete biography.
